ZED ZONE Best Weapons Tier List for 1.0 (All Four Tracks)
The zed zone best weapons tier list for version 1.0: S-tier melee, bows, guns and explosives, with Early Access damage data, 1.0 changes and acquisition tips.
FAQ
What is the single best weapon in ZED ZONE?
Do the zed zone best weapons change between modes?
Are Early Access damage numbers still accurate in 1.0?
What Are the ZED ZONE Best Weapons as of 1.0?
The zed zone best weapons depend on which track you are playing: melee, bows and crossbows, guns, or explosives. There is no single list that covers all four, because a silent compound bow and a belt-fed machine gun solve completely different problems. This tier list ranks each track separately, mixing recorded Early Access damage data with what changed at the 1.0 launch on November 6, 2026. Every numeric value below is as recorded during Early Access and may have been rebalanced, so treat them as relative rankings, last verified November 8, 2026 against version 1.0.11.

How Did We Rank the ZED ZONE Best Weapons?
We scored every weapon on four criteria. First, raw damage per hit or per burst. Second, upkeep: melee weapons wear down and need repair materials, guns need ammunition you may not have. Third, noise, because gunfire pulls every infected in earshot. Fourth, acquisition, since the best weapon on paper is useless if it only drops behind a Breaker nest. If you are new to the island, read the beginner guide first, and check the full catalogue in our all weapons overview.
Best Melee Weapons Tier List (Early Access Data)
Melee never runs out of ammunition, but it does wear down and must be repaired with matching materials. Damage values are as recorded during Early Access.
| Tier | Weapon | EA damage | Why it ranks here | How to get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | Katana ‘Ji’ | 198 | Highest melee damage in EA data | High-tier POI loot |
| S | Golf club | 148 | Huge damage, common club item | Houses, schools, loot |
| S | Mace bat | 118 | Fast club with spike damage | Urban loot, weapon racks |
| A | Katana ‘Red’ | 128 | Strong blade, lighter than clubs | POI loot, rare spawns |
| A | Fire axe | 88 | Chops trees, breaks doors, butchers carcasses | Garages, fire stations |
| A | Katana ‘Breeze’ | 100 | Balanced blade for mid-game | POI loot |
| B | Iron machete | 85 | Reliable craftable blade | Crafted at a workbench |
| B | Baseball bat | 64 | Common, cheap to maintain | Houses everywhere |
| C | Stone tools / pan / torch | 48-60 | Early-game stopgaps only | Crafted or scavenged |
The katana family is the long-running king of the zed zone best weapons melee track, but the fire axe is the best utility pick because it doubles as a tree-felling and butchering tool. Repairs scale with tier: the fire axe alone needs three grindstone charges per repair in EA data.
Best Bows and Crossbows Tier List
Bows and crossbows are the quietest ranged option and the best way to thin a horde without starting one. Their weaknesses are low capacity and arrows that eat large inventory slots. The compound bow was the strongest bow of Early Access, and the compound and mechanical crossbows sit just behind it.
| Tier | Weapon | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| S | Compound bow | Best EA bow, silent, reusable ammo |
| A | Compound crossbow | Higher per-shot punch than bows |
| A | Mechanical crossbow | Strong mid-tier crossbow |
| B | Iron crossbow | Craftable, decent damage |
| C | Wood bow / wood crossbow | Starting gear only |
See our ammo guide before committing to a bow build, because arrow inventory management is half the playstyle.
Best Guns Tier List
Guns are the most flexible track in the zed zone best weapons lineup, but they jam, they are loud, and every magazine is a logistics problem. Two machine guns dominated EA data: the M249 (128 damage, 1154 RPM, 200-round 5.56 belt) and the RPK (148 damage, 800 RPM, 75-round 7.62 drum). Version 1.0 added the Warden 60mm grenade cannon and an 84mm recoilless rifle per official materials, but no damage numbers are published, so their exact tier placement is community verification in progress.
| Tier | Weapon | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| S | M249, RPK | EA data kings of sustained damage |
| A | AK-47, AR-15, VSS | Reliable assault rifles, VSS is integrally suppressed |
| A | GM6 Lynx | Anti-materiel punch for war machines |
| B | Shotguns, SMGs | Strong close range, ammo-hungry |
| C | Handmade guns | Cheap to build, weak stats |
Best Explosives Tier List
Throwables and launchers clear camps and crack open high-threat enemies like Breakers. Frag grenades and molotov cocktails are the workhorses; the China Lake, Milkor-style rotary launcher and M230 giant gun trade ammo rarity for area damage. Traps such as landmines, barrel bombs and spike traps belong to base defense more than field combat.
How Do the 1.0 Game Modes Change the Rankings?
The zed zone best weapons are not mode-agnostic, and 1.0 gave us two new ways to test that claim. In Horde Mode, where you defend a base through waves and restock from air drops between them, sustained-fire guns and explosives climb a full tier while silent melee drops hard, because nothing is left to sneak past. On the main island and the new Far Island, the opposite holds: Dormant Hordes camp the roads and hospitals, so every noisy shot is a budget decision and the katana, compound bow and suppressed rifle stay on top. Cataclysm Mode, the second new 1.0 mode, pushes the list toward whatever you can keep fed under pressure, which usually means melee first and firearms as insurance. The one constant across every mode: upkeep rules never change, and a jammed or broken weapon of any tier ranks below a working stone axe.
Which Single Weapon Should You Prioritize First?
For a fresh 1.0 run, the answer is the fire axe: it fights, chops, breaks doors and butchers carcasses while you save every bullet. Once your workbenches are online, pivot toward a katana for combat and a compound bow for silent pulls, and keep one assault rifle loaded for emergencies. Our weapon mods guide and armor and exoskeleton guide cover the next two slots of your loadout, and the skills and traits page explains which stats multiply all of the above. Once the core kit works, upgrade your hauling with the best backpack so the loot from better tiers actually comes home.
