What Are ZED ZONE Mutants?
Standard zombies pressure you with numbers; ZED ZONE mutants pressure you with rules. Every special infected variant bends one mechanic — acid zones, speed, splitting bodies, oversized health pools — and learning each rule is the difference between a profitable hunt and a respawn. This guide catalogs every confirmed ZED ZONE mutant with its Early Access data, drops, and counter-play, verified against the 1.0 era as of version 1.0.11. Confirm numbers in-game after balance patches. For baseline zombie tiers and wildlife, see the all-enemies bestiary; for the machine bosses, see the bosses guide.
One habit separates veterans from casualties: identify mutants by silhouette before they close in. Acid variants announce themselves with color, the Crawler with speed, the Splitter with its swollen frame. Calling the mutant type early gives you the whole fight to pick the right counter instead of the last three seconds.

| Botanic | 600 | Sprouts damaging vines around itself once injured | Rotten meat, bone, tendon, fat, mutated tissue |

How Do I Counter Each ZED ZONE Mutant?
Blaster (380 HP). The Blaster’s death is the attack, not the kill itself — it erupts into acid pools and applies ignition. Finish it at range, then reposition before the pools spread. If you fight it indoors, plan your exit before it dies. A silent weapon from the best weapons tier list lets you pick Blasters out of a horde without aggroing the rest.
Spitter (365 HP). The Spitter is the only common mutant that out-ranges a melee build. Strafe perpendicular to its spit arc, close the gap during its recovery, and never stand in the lingering acid pools. Ranged players should prioritize Spitters first in any mixed pack, because their zones deny the ground you would otherwise kite across.
Botanic (600 HP). The Botanic punishes sustained damage: once injured, it grows damaging vines around itself, turning a duel into a cage match. Burst it down with your highest damage-per-second option before the vine field matures, or bait the vine growth and retreat until the effect fades. Its 600 HP is the highest recorded among regular ZED ZONE mutants, so do not start this fight with a worn blade.
Crawler. Speed is the whole kit. Crawlers cross open ground faster than any other zombie and punish reloading or healing animations. Keep obstacles between you and it, listen for the fast footsteps, and never let one flank you while you butcher another corpse.
Breakers. Breakers hold military bases, cellars, and similar high-risk points of interest, and they are the most dangerous humanoid enemies in the game — extreme damage, high speed. Engage with armor, full stamina, and a planned retreat path. The payoff is real: butcherable mutated hearts plus standard yields, and military sites hold military loot. Players farming Breakers should study skills and traits first, because surviving the hits matters more than dealing them.
Splitters. Every hit makes more enemies: striking a Splitter divides it into multiple Infected, so chip damage is a trap. Burst it down with concentrated fire and kill the fragments immediately, or kite the whole group into a War Machine patrol and let the machines do the work — the same trick detailed in the bosses guide. Splitters cannot be butchered, but their death drop is generous: mutated tissue, plant mutated tissue, neural tissue, bone, tendon, fat, rotten meat, and occasionally a mutated heart.
Boomer. Kill it at range, full stop. The death detonation floods a large area with acid, and melee-range kills trade one zombie for a pool you now stand inside. Mark it early in a horde and direct fire before it reaches the group.
Millipede. The Millipede is a walking supply cache: bulk mutated tissue, mutated hearts, and neural tissue. It is durable rather than fast, so treat it like a mini-boss — strafe its lunges, punish the recovery, and clear the area before you start harvesting so scavenging crows do not add pressure.
Why Are ZED ZONE Mutants Worth Farming?
Mutants are the economy. Mutated tissue from butchered special infected refines into doses that unlock the skill tree, and Millipede runs supply neural tissue in bulk. Even the fragments from a Splitter feed crafting recipes for bone glue and tendon cord. Because ZED ZONE mutants drop these progression materials reliably, hunting them is effectively farming experience by another name. In practice, a farming route that chains Spitter and Blaster spawns around safehouses turns ZED ZONE mutants from random dangers into a scheduled harvest — just watch for radiation fog on the PDA before committing to a route, since radiation zones punish under-geared detours.
ZED ZONE Mutants FAQ
Do mutants appear in horde waves? Special infected appear among escalating horde pressure, and the 1.0-era Dormant Hordes near hospitals can conceal them. Composition per wave is community verification in progress.
Did 1.0 change mutant HP values? Available records are Early Access era data. Per this wiki’s fact discipline, every figure above is flagged as recorded during Early Access — verify in-game, last verified November 8, 2026.
What is the best weapon against mutants? Armor-piercing firearms for plated targets and Breakers, silent bows for controlled pulls, and burst-damage melee for Botanics. Full rankings live in the weapons tier list.
