FAQ

What is the workbench chain in ZED ZONE?
The crafting station chain is Simple Workbench, then Workbench, then Simple Lathe, and finally the Chemical Bench and Medicine Bench. Each tier unlocks more advanced recipes, and every workbench can be picked up and moved with Q.
How do I unlock the Medicine Bench?
You must research the Medicine Bench in the skill tree and hold nitrate powder in your inventory. Nitrate powder is crafted at the Chemical Bench from nitric acid and charcoal, so the Medicine Bench is gated behind the full chemistry chain.
What does the Chemical Bench craft?
As recorded during Early Access, the Chemical Bench crafts sulfuric acid, nitric acid, nitrate powder, glue, sugar and several potions. Exact ratios were last verified November 8, 2026 against EA data, so confirm in-game.

How Does Crafting Work in ZED ZONE?

Crafting is the backbone of survival in ZED ZONE. After you crash-land on the quarantine island, almost every tool, weapon upgrade, medicine and base structure you rely on comes out of a crafting station. Understanding the station unlock chain matters far more than hoarding raw materials, because the best gear is gated behind station tiers, not just ingredients. This guide covers the full crafting progression as of version 1.0.11, with station costs, the complete Chemical Bench recipe table and the strategic order to build in. For what to craft first on day one, see our beginner guide.

Unlike survival games that hand you a single all-purpose bench, ZED ZONE forces specialization. A station built for woodworking cannot brew chemistry, and chemistry cannot produce medicine. Your base effectively grows a production line, and the survivors who plan that line early reach the endgame weeks ahead of those who improvise.

What Is the Workbench Unlock Chain?

ZED ZONE crafting follows a linear station chain. Build each station in this order:

Order Station Role
1 Simple Workbench Basic tools, melee weapons and early components
2 Workbench Refined items, metal components and weapon work
3 Simple Lathe Turned parts such as tubes and precision components
4 Chemical Bench Chemistry chain: acids, glue, nitrate powder, potions
5 Medicine Bench Medical items and colored doses for the skill tree

The exact build costs of the Simple Workbench, Workbench and Simple Lathe were not published in official patch notes — Community verification in progress. What is confirmed: workbenches can be picked up and carried by pressing Q, so you can relocate your entire production line as your base moves. That mobility is easy to underrate. Early bases are rarely permanent; radiation fog on the PDA map, wandering hordes and better loot biomes all push you to relocate at least once per run. A crafting room you can pack into your inventory in one trip beats a palatial workshop you abandon. Plan your base layout around a single compact crafting room to cut travel time.

What Does the Chemical Bench Require?

The Chemical Bench is your gateway to mid-game chemistry. Its build requirements, recorded during Early Access:

  • Wood ×10
  • Metal component ×10
  • Water bottle ×5
  • Tin can ×5
  • 50 energy and 4 minutes of crafting time

The metal component ×10 requirement is the real bottleneck — it is the universal advanced crafting material, and you will need more of it constantly. Expect to spend several scavenging runs feeding scrap metal into the Workbench before chemistry goes online. Read our metal component guide for farming routes, including the Spider Robot drop table, which hands you a full stack of components in a single kill.

What Are the Complete Chemical Bench Recipes?

The Chemical Bench runs a chained production line: each acid feeds the next recipe. Values below are as recorded during Early Access; verify against 1.0 in-game data before mass production.

Recipe Ingredients Output
Sulfuric acid Sulfur ore ×6 + contaminated water ×600 Sulfuric acid ×600
Nitric acid Saltpeter ×6 + sulfuric acid ×600 Nitric acid ×600
Nitrate powder Nitric acid ×600 + charcoal ×6 Nitrate powder ×3
Glue Sulfuric acid ×500 + bone ×15 Glue ×5

The chain logic is simple once mapped: mine yellow sulfur ore and white saltpeter ore, burn wood into charcoal at a campfire, and harvest contaminated water. Bones come from hunting deer and bears or from butchering Infected. Two planning details matter. First, sulfuric acid is consumed twice — once for nitric acid and again for glue — so always craft surplus. Second, the acid chain has no shortcuts: you cannot buy your way past chemistry with scavenging luck, because nitrate powder exists only at the end of this pipeline.

The Chemical Bench also produced sugar, stamina potions, health potions, strength potions, antitoxic potions and sprint potions during Early Access — sugar feeding the potion line. The colored doses (red, green, blue) are made at the Medicine Bench, not here. See skills and traits for how those doses feed the skill tree.

How Do I Unlock the Medicine Bench?

The Medicine Bench is the terminal station of the chain and the most heavily gated. You need two things:

  1. Research the Medicine Bench technology in the skill tree.
  2. Hold nitrate powder ×3 in your inventory to complete the unlock.

That means you must run the full acid chain three times over before medicine production opens up — one full pass yields a single batch of three powder, so the unlock consumes an entire batch. Its build cost, recorded during Early Access:

  • Glass bottle ×10
  • Glue ×5
  • Water bottle ×5
  • Metal component ×10
  • Wood ×10

Glass bottles are a scavenging tax rather than a craftable: raid kitchens, clinics and shelves early so the bottleneck never stalls you. Once running, the Medicine Bench crafts the red, green and blue doses used to unlock skill tree nodes, alongside high-tier healing items. This is why chemistry infrastructure should be a mid-game priority, not an afterthought.

Which Crafting Station Should I Build First?

Build the Simple Workbench within your first in-game day, the Workbench as soon as you have scrap metal flowing, and treat the Chemical Bench as your mid-game milestone. Every hour you delay chemistry is an hour you delay the Medicine Bench, doses, and the skill tree power spike that carries you into high-risk POIs. Pair your crafting progression with weapon work from the all-weapons overview so melee repairs and ammunition keep pace with station tiers, and keep one eye on 1.0 hotfixes — patch 1.0.10 overhauled storage interactions, so how you organize intermediate materials like charcoal and bone stacks has never been smoother.
